Red Crown was Standard Oil's answer to a simple problem: how do you convince a driver your gasoline is worth stopping for? A crown-shaped globe, visible from the road before the sign could even be read, was the answer — registered in 1915 and built into a West Coast station network.

After the 1911 Standard Oil breakup, several successor companies kept some version of the crown trademark, but Standard Oil of Ohio held onto the Red Crown name itself longest, marketing under it independently from 1912 until 1930.
