Red Crown was Standard Oil's answer to a simple problem: how do you convince a driver your gasoline is worth stopping for? A crown-shaped globe, visible from the road before the sign could even be read, was the answer — registered in 1915 and built into a West Coast station network that had motorists lining up at the bulk plant before dedicated stations even existed.
