Patented October 12, 1915. It says so in small type right under the crown, which tells you how seriously Standard of Indiana took this shape. The red crown on a navy starburst became the most defended trademark in American gasoline, and the company went to court to keep it that way.

After the 1911 breakup, several Standard successors kept the crown and each drew it a little differently — Indiana held Red Crown, Kentucky dropped the word Red and went with plain Crown. When the Independent Oil Men of America registered a Red Hat mark in 1925 as a parody of this exact crown, Standard of Indiana sued and won across fifteen states. This design comes from a 1980s silk screen ceramic reproduction of the original graphic, part of a set that has been in the family collection for decades.
