Orange and green is not a color pairing anyone chooses by accident. Royal 400 put the independents' red top hat at the center of it and ringed the whole thing in an orange that carries a hundred feet down the road — a premium grade wearing the association's most contested trademark.

Printed on a Gildan 18500 heavy blend hooded sweatshirt — 8 oz cotton-poly, classic fit, double-lined hood with a color-matched drawcord and a front pouch pocket. Tubular knit with no side seams. Tear-away label. Machine wash cold, tumble dry low.

Below the hat sits a small ring reading The Emblem of Dependability, with the Independent thunderbird inside it — the association mark of the Independent Oil Men of America, who registered Red Hat in 1925 as a shot at Standard's Red Crown and spent the next several years in court over it. The 400 in the name is a grade designation, the same convention Shell used on its aviation fuel. This design comes from a 1980s silk screen ceramic reproduction of the original graphic, part of a set that has been in the family collection for decades.

The perfect gift for the collector chasing the whole Red Hat family, the sign hunter who likes a color combination nobody would approve today, the restorer with a period-correct pump, the dad who reads the fine print on a sign before the big lettering, and anyone who wants something on the wall that isn't beige.

The Faded Label Co. — keeping the golden age of American roadside art alive, one product at a time.
