Jimmy Doolittle set a land speed record in 1932 running Shell aviation fuel — four years before Shell hired him outright as their aviation manager. Doolittle, an MIT-trained engineer and gifted test pilot, pushed hard for high-octane 100/130 avgas when most of the industry thought it wasn't worth the extra cost.
