He borrowed against his inheritance, tapped into a well site Shell let him use, and started capturing natural gasoline that would otherwise go to waste — Signal Products Company was born from a farmer's ruin.

Signal Gasoline Company became Signal Gas and Oil in 1928, then entered a long-running partnership with Standard Oil in 1931. By the 1950s, Signal had grown into the largest independent oil company on the West Coast.
