National Refining Company dreamed up the name "White Rose" back in 1890, but the brand's real home became Canada. After the Canadian Oil Company went bankrupt in 1908, National bought its assets and reorganized as Canadian Oil Companies, Limited — selling White Rose gasoline across the country for over half a century.

The brand's original "Boy and Slate" logo ran for decades before a 1939 design competition replaced it with the actual White Rose flower, won by artist Bill Templeton. By the time Shell Canada bought the company in 1962, White Rose had been the country's last major domestically-owned petroleum brand.
